Seeing my Mom Suffer & How it Affected her Life sure got My Attention!

Seeing my mom suffer and how it affected her life sure got my attention. She tried everything else with no results. It wasn't until she tried chiropractic that she got her life back.
I saw first hand what chiropractic did for my mom and was intrigued. Then I came to find out how it simply involves removing interference and allowing the body to heal itself. I knew I wanted to do that for others.
I went to the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College and was pleasantly surprised by the depth of knowledge that we were required to own.(I can say that now).
My Purpose
I see my purpose as helping people of all ages regain their health and show them how to keep it.One of the most gratifying and rewarding aspects of doing what I do is seeing people get back to doing what they love to do.
Away from the office
I met my wife while we were both at Acadia University. We have three very active kids. There is no greater joy for me than participating in my kids sports and activities.
I exercise 5-6 times per week be it weights, cardiovascular exercise or yoga. I adjust my entire family (even my mother in law) weekly to keep them as healthy as possible and recognize the importance of a healthy diet.
Thanks for visiting our site. I look forward to meeting you in person and learning how we may be of service to you. Give our office a call, or email me using the link below and let’s arrange a time to see if we can help.
Halifax Chiropractor :: Dr. Karen A. Smith
I began to suffer Back Pain at age 15!

After many years of playing competitive sports as a child and teenager, I began suffering from back pain around age 15. At that time, I explored several healthcare options without success. Due to my back, I was told that if I played university volleyball I would not be able to walk by the time I turned 30. That is when I decided to try Chiropractic care. The treatment I received allowed me to play varsity volleyball for Dalhousie and I’m happy to say that I have passed the 30 year mark with no back pain thanks to Chiropractic and a healthy lifestyle.
Why I choose to become a Chiropractor
Quite simply, I chose to become a Chiropractor because of the significant impact Chiropractic care had on not only my back pain, but my overall health. Dr Doug Penrose was my first Chiropractor and it was his passion that also inspired me to become a Chiropractor.
I am a native of Halifax and graduated from Dalhousie University in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. I have since graduated with clinic honours from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) where I was Co-President of the Paediatrics Club.
Paediatrics, Female Health & Pregnancy
I have always has a special interest in paediatrics, female health and pregnancy and now as a new mother this passion has intensified. To be able to help more pregnant women and families, I have taken extra training in paediatrics and prenatal care including obtaining the Certificate of Proficiency in the Webster Technique which is used specifically for pregnant women (http://icpa4kids.com/about/webster_technique.htm). I am also fully certified in the Thompson Technique (http://thompsonchiropractictechnique.com). I am a lifelong learner, and continue to further my knowledge by attending various courses and seminars.
I Enjoy Helping all patient Achieve their Health Goals
Whether you are a stay-at-home Mom, office worker, amateur or competitive athlete, I enjoy helping all patients achieve their health goals and treat according to each individuals particular health needs. I believe all aspects of health need to be addressed to achieve these goals and therefore I may include adjustments and /or mobilizations of the spine and extremities, contemporary medical acupuncture (including electro-acupuncture), soft tissue therapy, stretching and strengthening exercises, lifestyle and nutritional counseling and custom orthotics as part of my treatment plan.
At Home with Dr. Smith
My husband, daughter and I enjoy many outdoor activities, sports and leading a healthy lifestyle. We also enjoy traveling, cycling and cooking healthy meals. From a community standpoint, I have raised funds for charities including Feed Nova Scotia and try to support local businesses through buying locally produced products. I am also a member of various community groups including the local Breastfeeding Community of Practice.
My husband, infant daughter and I all receive regular Chiropractic care as part of our healthy lifestyle to help ensure we are as healthy as we can be. I adjusted my daughter within a half an hour of her being born and continue to adjust her regularly!
I currently hold the position of Council Secretary with the Nova Scotia College of Chiropractors and am a member of the International Chiropractic Paediatric Association, Nova Scotia College of Chiropractors and the Canadian Chiropractic Association.
